Early spring this year, the Travel + Leisure's Co. Design & Procurement team embarked on an insightful day trip to Dalton, Georgia, a city renowned for its rich heritage in the carpet and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) manufacturing industry. This excursion was specifically aimed at visiting the impressive manufacturing plant of CM Hospitality, a prominent player in the industry known for its high-quality products tailored for the hospitality sector. The visit was not only educational but also a unique opportunity to delve deep into the intricate processes that transform raw materials into exquisite flooring solutions.

The day began with an introduction to the design timeline that CM Hospitality follows, which is crucial in ensuring that their products meet the evolving needs of the hospitality industry and other industries such as multi-family, residential and healthcare. The team learned that the design phase often starts with extensive research and conceptualization, where designers gather inspiration from various sources, including current trends, historical influences, and the specific ambiance that clients wish to create. This initial phase is vital as it sets the foundation for the entire product development journey. Once the design concept is established, the process moves into product development. This phase involves sourcing raw materials, which consist of micro plastics, color pigments, fibers, locally sourced limestone and many more. The team observed how CM Hospitality prioritizes quality materials, as well as minimizing waste and a carbon footprint, reflecting a growing trend in the industry towards sustainability.

As the team toured the carpet and LVT plants, they witnessed firsthand the meticulous steps involved in turning these raw materials into finished products. The manufacturing process includes spinning micro plastics into fibers and then into yarn, dyeing, tufting, and finishing, each step requiring precision and expertise. The team was particularly fascinated by the advanced technology employed in the production lines, which ensures consistency and high-quality output while also allowing for customization to meet specific client needs.

During the visit, the team also explored the design elements that pay homage to Dalton's rich history, particularly its famed Peacock Alley. This area is known for its vibrant past and has become a symbol of the city’s legacy in the textile industry. Moreover, the impact of these manufacturing plants on the local community of Dalton cannot be overstated. The factories, including CM Hospitality, have been instrumental in providing employment opportunities for families over multiple generations. The team learned about the strong community ties that the company has fostered, with many employees having parents and grandparents who also worked in the industry. This continuity has created a deep sense of loyalty and belonging among the workforce, contributing to the overall economic stability of the region.

As the day concluded, the Travel + Leisure Design & Procurement team left Dalton with a profound appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in carpet and LVT manufacturing, as well as an understanding of the broader implications of these industries on local culture and economy. The visit not only highlighted the technical aspects of product development but also underscored the importance of honoring local history and supporting community growth through sustainable practices and job creation. This enriching experience will undoubtedly strengthen our partnership between both companies and enhance future projects and design philosophies. Special thanks to Susan Curlee Inc. & CM Hospitality for a great experience and trip.
